Foundry Street Warehouse Convention Center – Athens, GA

The Foundry Street Warehouse is a 100-year-old timber- and steel-framed 2-story structure with a single-story structure located at the east end. The warehouse is located across Foundry Street from the Athens Classic Convention Center. In order to increase capacity of the Classic Center, the warehouse was converted into a convention center on the second floor with later development to be completed on the lower level. Considerable modifications were made to the building to bring it into current code applicability, and a stair tower was completed above the roof for the construction and installation of a pedestrian bridge across Foundry Street to the Classic Center. The single-story structure is to be converted later into a performing arts center. Renovations to this building utilized exposure of the existing framing wherever possible. The majority of the existing structure, consisting of steel beams, columns with wood timber floors, has remained in place.

Pink Morton Theater - Athens, GA

The Pink Morton Theater was constructed approximately 100 years ago as a vaudeville theater by an African-American entrepreneur, Pink Morton.  this building was used for vaudeville performances and later as a motion picture theater.  Exterior walls consisted of mulit-wythe brick masonry and all interior framing was timber.  The theater contained two balconies, a stage and stage loft.  The roof structure consisted of heavy timber trusses with timber plank decking.  Restoration of this building took approximately ten years for funding and construction, with the first phase stabilizing the roof structure to stop any leaking or further deterioration of the timber trusses and decking.  The building is currently being used as a performing arts center.
