The
Unum Cherry Street Parking Deck is the latest addition of
multi-level parking required at Unum’s Chattanooga
Tennessee office complex. The superstructure including
the lateral load resisting system is composed of
structural precast concrete elements.
Due to
the existing variable topography of this urban location,
extensive cast-in-place concrete site walls of the
cantilevered as well as fixed basement type were required
to resist lateral soil loads. Wall heights varied between
zero to over two stories.
A
shallow soil supported system was determined to be the
most economical foundation strategy. Because of concerns
involving differential foundation settlement, soil
enhancement utilizing rammed aggregate piers was utilized.
Use of this enhancement resolved settlement issued and
increased the allowable soil bearing which then allowed
reduction of the foundation size.
